Sleeping in Self Tanner: Tips for a Stain-Free Night

A flawless glow doesn’t have to mean stained sheets or a ruined false tan. If you love your bronzed look but dread the mess that comes with it, sleeping in self-tanner can actually be stress-free with the right prep and protection. Here’s how to keep your tan intact — and your bedding spotless — all night long.

1. Let Your Tanner Dry Completely

Before hopping into bed, make sure your self-tanner is fully dry. Applying a self-tan drying powder can help absorb excess moisture and prevent the sticky feeling that often transfers color onto your sheets. Give your skin at least 15–30 minutes to dry before dressing or lying down.

Tan Fan Self Tan Drying Powder keeps self-tanner fresh, dry, and smudge-free.

2. Wear the Right Sleepwear

Choose loose, dark clothing like tanning pajamas or an oversized cotton shirt. Tight fabrics can cause streaking or patchy spots while you sleep. For extra protection, consider slipping into a fake tan sleep sac like the Tan Fan Sleep Sac — these are designed to keep your tan in place and your sheets safe from stains.

3. Protect Your Bedding

If you’re not using a self-tan sleep sac, you can still shield your sheets. Layer your bed with a dark tanning blanket to create a barrier between your skin and your bedding.

4. Keep Cool

Heat and sweat can break down your false tan overnight. If your room gets warm, keep the air conditioning on low. Staying cool will help preserve your tan’s evenness and keep it from rubbing off.

5. Sleep Smart

Try to sleep on your back if possible — this reduces friction and helps your tan develop evenly. If you’re worried about staining your pillow, slip it into a tanning bed protector or use an old pillowcase for the night.

6. Morning After Care

In the morning, rinse off your self-tanner with lukewarm water. Avoid scrubbing too hard, and pat your skin dry instead of rubbing. Moisturize right after to extend your tan’s life and keep your skin glowing.

Sleeping in self-tanner doesn’t have to be a messy or deal. With a few smart habits — like using a spray tan sleeping bag, self-tanning sheets, or self-tan sheet protector — you can wake up to a perfect, golden glow and stain-free bedding.
