The Best Way to Shower After Self-Tanning

The Best Way to Shower After Self-Tanning

Showering after a self tanning session might seem simple, but doing it wrong can ruin an otherwise perfect glow. From timing your rinse to using the right products, here's how to keep your false tan smooth, streak-free, and long-lasting.

Wait for the Proper Development Time

Before stepping into the shower, make sure your false tan has had enough time to fully develop. Most formulas need 6–8 hours, but check your product instructions. If you’re sleeping in self tanner, consider using self-tanning sheets, like Tan Fan Sleep Sac to protect both your skin and your bedding during the development time.

Use Lukewarm Water — Not Hot

Hot water can strip your tan and cause it to fade unevenly. Opt for a lukewarm rinse to help preserve your color.

Skip Soap During the First Rinse

Your first post-tan shower should be a quick, soap-free rinse. Allow the guide color (the temporary bronzer) to wash off naturally. Avoid loofahs, scrubs, or anything abrasive.

Avoid Harsh Cleansers

Once you’re allowed to use soap again, stay away from strong body washes. If you’re trying to remove leftover buildup or patches, gently incorporate self tan remover only when needed.

Pat, Don’t Rub

Rubbing your skin with a towel causes friction, which can lift your tan. Pat dry with a soft towel to maintain an even finish.

Keep Skin Moisturized

Hydrated skin holds onto tan better. Apply a lightweight moisturizer after every shower. This helps prevent cracking, patchiness, and uneven fading.

Avoid Sweating Immediately After Showering

Your tan is still settling after your first rinse. To avoid streaks or sweat marks, stay cool to regulate temperature and dry your skin gently.

Extend Your Tan With Proper Night Care

Your nighttime routine matters, too. If you want to deepen or maintain your glow, protect your bedding using items like  self tan sleep sac, including the Self Tan Sleep Sac – Dark Tanner, designed with a heavier-weight bottom layer to protect against dark tanner transfer and a lightweight top to keep you cool and comfortable. This not only prevents stains but also reduces friction while you sleep.

Showering the right way after tanning plays a major role in how your glow turns out. With smart habits — like gentle rinsing, pat-drying, moisturizing, and using tools such as self-tanning sheets, self tan sleeping bag, and tan fan — you can enjoy a smooth, long-lasting bronze every single time.
